Important Places to Visit in Varkala
Kappil Lake
Kappil Lake is a scenic estuary to the north of Varkala. Tourists can relax and unwind while surrounded by tall coconut trees. Lake is a fascinating estuary that is known for being a peaceful picnic location surrounded by coconut trees. It eventually merges with the Arabian Sea, providing a spectacular view from the lake’s bridge. Pedal boating is very popular on the lake. The boats can be rented from a nearby boat club.
Varakala Beach
Visiting the beach, which is only 10 kilometers from the small hamlet and offers breathtaking views of the beautiful, azure waves of the sea, is one of the most intriguing things to do in Varkala. Sivagiri Mutt
Travel about 3 km from Varkala town and you will reach one of the most popular pilgrim destinations of Kerala – Sivagiri Mutt. It is also the headquarters of the Sree Narayana Dharma Sangham, an organization of the great reformer Sree Narayana Guru’s disciples and followers. The Mutt campus sprawls over an area of 200 acres and you will surely be attracted by the distinctive multi-tiered white terraces of the mutt, once you enter there. Situated at an elevated plateau, the mutt is considered sacred. It is here that the social reformer and sage Sree Narayana Guru breathed his last in 1928..
Varkala Culture Center

Varkala is 18 kilometres away from the mangrove forest in Nedungolam, Paravur, in the district of Kollam. 4km kayaking is ideal for a half-day adventure and can be done in the morning or evening. Sailing through Nedungolam’s waterways, particularly the mangrove forest, is a must-do activity.
Kilimanoor Palace
Raja Ravi Varma, one of Kerala’s most famous artists, has paintings and artwork on display at the Kilimanoor palace. The palace, which covers 15 hectares, holds Raja Ravi Varma’s studio, where he spent time making his exquisite art creations. Because of its ties to the famed painter, the palace is a hotspot for art historians and cultural fans. Aside from that, the palace’s architectural design is magnificent and a sight to behold.
Ponnumthuruthu Island
This isolated isle is surrounded by the Anjengo backwaters and may be reached by boat from a makeshift pier in Nedunganda settlement. Legend has it that the queens of the Travancore Royal Family used to hide their gold and ornaments on this island, which literally translates to “Golden Island.” Only a 100-year-old Shiva Parvati temple known as ‘Thuruthu Kshethram’ remains on the island today. The temple looks like it came straight out of a postcard, set in the middle of a lush coconut grove and surrounded by the backwaters. On Shivarathri, the island comes alive with celebrations and is illuminated by lamps.
Anjengo Fort and Light House
Since Anjego Fort and Light House are located only a small distance from each other, visiting the them at Anchuthengu is one of the most interesting things to do in Varkala. The fort is remembered as one of the most important historical sites as it was the first British settlement in India. It is a perfect spot for picnics and sightseeing. You can catch awe-inspiring views of the sea, hills, and greenery from the lighthouse. The fort is known for its minimal use of material yet had a grand look about it.
Varkala Aquarium
If you are visiting Varkala with kids, then this is a must-see place. The aquarium is situated between two beaches, Black beach and Odayam beach, which makes it even more exciting to visit.
