Important Places to Visit in Kumarakom
Kumarakom Bird Sanctuary
The Kumarakom Bird Sanctuary, located near the picturesque backwaters, is a birdwatcher’s dream. It is located in the Kottayam district and is in close proximity to the Vembanad Lake, another popular tourist attraction in Kumarakom. Visit the Kumarakom Bird Sanctuary to learn about many migrating birds such as the Siberian Stork and Kingfisher. A 10-minute boat ride from this place will take you to Pathiramanal Island, commonly known as Sand of Midnight.
Vembanad Lake
Vembanad Lake, the confluence of ten rivers, is the city’s crowning gem. The endless captivating backwaters and stunning lake backdrop entice you to stay in this city indefinitely. Rent a houseboat, explore the lake’s vista, and enjoy lovely romantic time with your spouse on Vembanad Lake, which is great for a romantic holiday. You’ll see right away that this is one of Kumarakom’s greatest tourist attractions.
Thanneermukkom Bund
It was designed to obstruct the tides and is the world’s largest mud regulator in India. Because this barrier divides the water into two sections, each half has a different colour. This is a beautiful place to visit. You can either follow the road running adjacent or take a boat trip to get a better perspective of the entire scene. This is one of the rejuvenating Kumarakom tourist attractions.
Aruvikkuzhi Waterfall
This exhilarating waterfall, surrounded by rubber plantations, will undoubtedly rejuvenate and relax your tired soul. The Aruvikkuzhi Waterfall is a visual treat and a great site for a picnic or a hike. Imagine a thundering waterfall concealed within the tranquil atmosphere and beautiful green rubber plantation; no photographer would want to miss out. It is popular with young people who want to get away from the stresses of everyday life, not simply photographers. If you enjoy trekking, climb to the top of the waterfall to visit St Mary’s Church, one of Kumarakom’s most important religious sites.
Kumarakom Craft Museum
This is one of the most popular tourist destinations in the area. Weekends are when you’ll find the most people at this location. You can also visit this location if you are looking for historical and culturally significant souvenirs. Look at the Kathakali masks, religious statues, and other trinkets that have been painstakingly created.
Pathiramanal Island
Pathiramanal is a beautiful island which was once the property of the Thaimattatil family until 1979. The island is covered with dense natural vegetation and offers a perfect climatic condition for regional flora and fauna to thrive. The attraction is also famous as a bird watcher’s paradise and a favourite amongst nature lovers.
St Mary’s Church
The oldest, yet well preserved Orthodox Church in India was built in 1579 with a fusion of typical Persian and Kerala style of architecture. The walls of the Church are adorned with murals which have been designed in Western and Oriental style. The altar of the Church is decked with embellishments in gold which glitters in the presence of a congregation. The galleries, pillars, cornices and the windows talk tons about an era bygone.
Ettumanoor Mahadeva Temple
This ancient Shiva temple holds great relevance as this is where the Pandavas and Sage Vyasa had worshipped. The multi-tiered gate greets you to a divine space where the heart and soul are in complete bliss. As per history, the famous Nataraj statue situated inside the sanctum sanctorum of the temple was donated by the erstwhile Maharaja of Travancore. The eternal lamp, alight throughout the year is placed right in the middle of the temple.
