Important Places to Visit in Ponmudi
Golden Valley
Golden Valley got its name from the golden stones and pebbles that may be found here. Golden Valley is a picturesque Ponmudi tourist destination nestled on the banks of the Kallar River, famed for its crystal clear water, lush green valley, and golden sand. Kallar Bridge is the only way to get to this valley. Admire the clear gushing water of the river or have a dip in it once you’ve arrived at this panoramic area.
Peppara Wildlife Sanctuary
Peppara Wildlife Sanctuary is located along the catchment area of the Peppara Dam on the Karamana River and is open all year. Evergreen woods, hills, valleys, and freshwater wetlands abound throughout the animal refuge. This nature sanctuary, which covers around 75 square kilometres, is home to 43 species of mammals, 233 species of birds, 46 species of reptiles, 13 species of amphibians, and 27 species of fish. Tigers, leopards, sloth bears, elephants, deer, Bonnet Macaques, Nilgiri Langurs, Lilgiri Tahr, and other animals usually found here include tiger, leopard, sloth bear, elephant, deer, Bonnet Macaque, Nilgiri Langur, Lilgiri Tahr, and others.
Agasthayarkoodam
Agasthayarkoodam (6129 feet) is Kerala’s second highest peak and one of the most prized trekking trails in the country. This trek’s woodland region is rich in medical herbs, having over 2000 medicinal plants on its land, and it is close to Kottoor. The Agasthayarkoodam forests are also notable for their diverse animals and expansive meadows. Agasthayarkoodam is a trekker’s dream come true. It’s a 28-kilometer hike that takes two days to accomplish.
Kallar
The name ‘Kallar’ comes from two words: ‘kallu’ which means stone and ‘aru’ which means river. This scenic location en route Ponmudi from Trivandrum gets its name after River Kallar which flows through this region. It is a preferred destination for adventurers and ordinary tourists. It is located on the banks of the Vamanapuram River, a tributary of the Neyyar River. You can spot birds and butterflies of rare varieties in this place. The Golden Valley and Meenmutty Falls are two popular trekking destinations from Kallar.
Shenduruny Wildlife Sanctuary
Shenduruny Wildlife Sanctuary is a Ponmudi tourist destination where animals are allowed to live in their natural habitat. It is a magnificent home to various endangered species. This wildlife refuge attracts travellers from all over the world with its perfect blend of stunning beauty and adventure. Koyikkal Palace
In the present, the palace is known for its folklore museum and Numismatics museum which are set up by the State Archaeological Department. A visit to this museum will introduce you with the remarkable art of Kerala which is stored here in the form folk arts, household utensils, and musical instruments. The museum also owns a rare article called “Chandravalayam” which has become a major attraction for tourists. Vacationers, in large number, visit this place to watch its coin collection which has coins from different periods.
Mankkayam Falls
Situated around 45 km north-east of Thiruvananthapuram, Mankkayam is one of the famous Ponmudi tourist places. The Chittar River emerges from the massive hill range of Chemunchi and flows down through the dense forests creating a tributary called Mankkayam. The two most mesmerizing waterfalls in this region include Kalakayam and Kurissadi. The area around the Mankkayam waterfall is covered with thick forests. After spending enough time at this serene spot, you can also head for trekking to Varayadin Motta which is home to the endangered species of wild goat.
