Important Places to Visit in Munnar

Eravikulam National Park

Eravikulam National Park

One of the main attractions near Munnar is the Eravikulam National Park. This park, which covers an area of 97 square kilometers and is home to the Nilgiri Tahr, a native mammal of the Western Ghats, is one of Kerala’s greatest. The Neelakurinji flowers, which bloom just once every 12 years, are another highlight of this park, which is located on the 2,700-meter high Anamudi hill. A great place for trekking, the park offers a magnificent view of the tea plantations caressed by blankets of mists. It is one of the most popular places which will surely make your Munnar sightseeing quite interesting.

Mattupetty Dam

Another prime draw for visitors, located about 13 km from Munnar Town, is Mattupetty Situated at a height of 1700 m above sea level. Mattupetty is known for its storage masonry dam and the beautiful lake, which offers pleasurable boat rides, enabling one to enjoy the surrounding hills and landscape. The intriguing tea plantations in and around the area soothe the soul, and the drive to the dam itself can be therapeutic in and of itself. Near Munnar Town lie Chinnakanal and its waterfalls, popularly known as the Power House Waterfalls, which cascade down a steep rock 2000 m above sea level. The spot is enriched with a scenic view of the Western Ghat ranges. When you have travelled about seven kilometres from Chinnakanal, you reach Anayirangal. Anayirangal, 22 km from Munnar, is a lush green carpet of tea plants. A trip on the splendid reservoir is an unforgettable experience. The Anayirangal dam is surrounded by tea plantations and evergreen forests.

Tea Museum

Munnar has a legacy of its own when it comes to the origins and evolution of tea plantations. Taking account of this legacy and to preserve and showcase some of the exquisite and interesting aspects of the genesis and growth of tea plantations in Kerala’s high ranges, a museum exclusively for tea was opened some years ago by Tata Tea in Munnar. This Tea Museum houses artifacts, photographs and machineries; all of which have a story to tell about the origins and growth of tea plantations in Munnar. The museum is located at the Nallathanni Estate of Tata Tea in Munnar and is worth a visit.

The iconic Travancore style castle, The Krishnapuram Palace was built by Anizham Thirunal Marthanda Varma in the 18th century. This palace is a rare specimen of the glorious ancient past of Kerala. It is one of the most beautiful masterpieces of Kerala Style architecture today the palace is a major tourist attraction and also contains a small museum maintained by the Archaeological department of Kerala. Do visit for witnessing the breath taking Kerala style architecture and several antiquities from the Travancore era.

Anamudi Peak

This is the highest mountain peak in South India. It has an elevation of 8,842-ft above the mean sea level. The beauty of this peak is it is not in the usual pyramidal or conical peak. It is a huge monolith rock in an elephant-like structure. That is why it is named as Ananimudi which means the forehead of an elephant. You can view this peak by nearing Eravikulam National Park. It is 13-km away from Munnar

This is a rain forest and protected area of the Western Ghats Mountain Ranges preset in Idukki, Kerala. This one’s a paradise for wildlife lovers. You will be exploring the heights and this forest cover from 1,600-ft to 7,500-ft through jeep safari. Known widely for its eco-tourism, this sanctuary is skirted by the Eravikulam National Park. It is on the highway of Munnar to Udumalpet.

This is a natural acoustic phenomenon place in Munnar. 600 ft above the sea level in Munnar there is a beautiful point which can captivate your senses and seduce your eyes completely. In its breathtaking surroundings, if you scream anything it will come back to you, it is considered as one of the most beautiful and highest point of Munnar from where you can see the whole picturesque landscapes of Munnar. This place itself is a hill locked area and it is one of the best places to explore in Munnar.

You will feel heaven on earth once you visit the 3rd highest Mountain peak of the Western Ghats Mountain Ranges. This is an accessible peak with moderate difficulties. When you reach this peak, you will be at an altitude of 8,661-ft above the mean sea level. In May, you can see the Tamil Nadu on the East and Kerala on the west. The clouds just touch your feet and go here. You must visit here to see the sunrise above the blanket of clouds just below your feet.
